Musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries in sport and everyday living

Injuries to our body can occur at any time as a result of a direct blow or fall (fracture), a sprain in a ligament, or a strain or rupture in a muscle. Ageing, wear and tear, over doing it and surgery also play an important role in our body’s ability to function.

Early assessment is highly recommended to establish the full extent of any injury that causes pain, swelling, bruising or restricted movement in a joint or muscle. The earlier the intervention the quicker the outcome.

Sports Specific Massage

Sports specific massage is a very effective treatment for all levels of participation in sport and fitness. Many people now enjoy regular sports massage for the maintenance of healthy muscles and for the prevention and treatment of injury. It can be used for pre-competition maintenance and post-competition treatments.

Clinical Soft Tissue Therapy

Although soft tissue injury may be caused by participating in sports and fitness training they can also be sustained from accidents, overuse, work occupations, normal daily activities and hobbies. Clinical Soft Tissue Therapy is an advanced manual therapy and is often complemented with other treatments like acupuncture, ultrasound, corrective taping techniques and rehabilitation.

During the initial consultation soft tissue structures are gently assessed for pain, restriction and dysfunction. Treatments are a combination of integrated advanced soft tissue release techniques, trigger point therapy, osteopathic articulations and passive and active stretching to gently manipulate scar tissue and improve muscle extensibility.

Patients are provided with step by step advice on how to effectively manage their condition at home with appropriate rehabilitation activities and exercises.

Clinical soft tissue therapy may be an appropriate treatment for the following conditions:

  • Aching painful stiff joints and muscles, e.g., neck, shoulders, back, ankles, knees, hips, elbows and wrists.
  • Post-surgery fractures, shoulder dislocation or decompression, hip replacement, knee replacement or discectomy.
  • Poor posture causing stiffness, restricted movement and muscle imbalance.
  • A non-sporting soft tissue injury, fall or accident.
  • Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).
  • An ongoing musculoskeletal condition that benefits from regular treatment (referred to as maintenance).
  • Ruptured, torn or tight muscles.
  • Joint sprains and muscles strains.
